I don't understand why this is controversial-Japan had an early and aggressive response, everyone wore masks and socially distanced, and didn't have a lot of cases. I don't see why people are looking for a coverup.

Because there was community spread in Osaka, Tokyo and Kobe in March, and the local medical and epidemiological community was pretty freaked out. There were serious warnings about 400k fatalities being a possibility.

I mean, I understand that there was spread but it looks like either because of masks or cultural distancing or whatnot it never got bad and was contained aggressively. I guess I don't know what would cause one to doubt the official story regarding the case counts.

The reason there was so much doubt is twofold. First, a policy Japan had that every positive test ended up in a hospital bed. The criteria for getting tested were extraordinarily tight, in part because they used the tests as a way to gate hospital admissions

The other reason is that the official count, which had been flat, went up very rapidly after the Olympics were officially postponed on March 24. This, combined with great alarm by prefectural governors, and the health ministry's own leaked internal forecasts for April, were scary
