We are paying too much attention to places that beat the pandemic with a vigorous policy response, and not enough to places that beat it just kind of by accident. This is human (we all want a feeling of control, and our editors want bullet points) but leads to false understanding

how long will it take us to figure out what this secret sauce is? the difference in outcomes can't *all* be the US completely fucking it up beyond the pale... Right?
-
It's likely that we never will entirely figure it out. Epidemiology is one of those fields that even with perfect hindsight doesn't become easy.

Note Japan *does* appear to (partially) share two elements w/other countries in Asia: 1) High mask usage 2) Policies resulting in 80% of confirmed cases either being a) in hospital or b) designated coronavirus hotels. Only 20% of infected stay at home.https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2020/05/06/national/science-health/2000-coronavirus-infected-people-staying-home-japan/#.XrSoNhMzagQ …

Agree on the mask usage, but you have the second part backwards. The policy of hospitalizing all confirmed cases (which only ended recently) led to extreme levels of undertesting.

how's mask usage over there? anecdotally, in Seattle, maybe 2/3 of the people in the Whole Foods are wearing masks, and like 10% of people walking around outside.
-
Mask use was high to begin with and is almost universal now, at least where I am in Kyoto.
