i mean i could call america islamophobic and you could respond w a picture of an american hugging a muslim, & it wouldn’t totally demolish the claim. i don’t have data or anything but the japanese DID go to all the trouble of enshrining pasonaru supesu throughout shinto.

god guys do you want me to just pass you along to a japanese person to confirm that norms around personal space in japan are different than they are in cleveland? what’s the issue here?

The reason I find your pronouncements silly is because I live in Japan and see how people are behaving around me.

well then i’m astonished you don’t recognize that norms around personal space differ between the US and japan. i read it about it, i experienced it, i talked about it w my airbnb host for hours...little did i know this was all just a vast conspiracy to fool me, which they did.

We're making fun of you not because these norms aren't different, but because Japan is full of places that put people into close and sometimes intimate physical proximity to each other, from public transit to offices to bars and clubs, all of which have remained open.

yup i’ve seen them (though as we’ve discussed that doesn’t count) but who cares, i’m relieved we all now agree that norms around personal space differ between the US and japan *even though* many subways are crowded in japan. your point was vital and necessary.
