If you came across a paper two years ago that you just barely remember, good luck finding it online. If you bookmarked it, you might actually find it. I burrow like a gopher through weird Internet subcultures and bookmark the curious stuff so I have a prayer of finding it again

The psychology of bookmarking really does boil down to "give me permission to close these tabs that I'll never look at again", but the details are subtle. It's also an independence thing—Google's algorithm doesn't get to dictate what you remember or are able to look for

My favorite Pinboard feature is the one where it reminds you that you already saved a link. I love it when I save a page on how to do something obscure that I’ve been hunting for the last 30 mins, only to be reminded that I saved it 3 years ago.
