Are you stressed at 4 AM? Spend an hour watching this dude and his silent apprentice make a guitar from scratch with ridiculously precise hand tools.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAeXskZHC2o …

I had NO IDEA that some newly built violins are "antiqued" to make them look old, like acid-washed jeans. Apparently this is a thing for all kinds of musical instruments.https://youtu.be/xejx48lZVhQ?t=727 …

it's not just looks something about the aging makes wood just sound nicer as a resonator, so some of that is attempting to chemically speed up/imitate some of that process.

If you look at the video a lot of it is aesthetic, scratching and dinging the violin up to imitate decades of (mis)use

yeah, conditioning and distressing are... weirdly conflated for a lot of people in a lot of fields

In the case of my violin, the maker attempted to replicate the scratches and wear of the specific del Gesu it was based on. I agree it's a bit silly, but it does look nice (and saves you from feeling quite o terrible about every new scratch you give it...)

Fender makes you pay dearly for their “relic” instruments, which are not just antiqued but literally damaged

The antiquing obsession is sort of a byproduct of the history of violin making. The golden age of violin making was in Cremona Italy between 1555 and the early 1700s. There were actually two golden ages, both instigated by Amati and separated by plague....

The most influential were obviously Antonio Stradivari (1644-1737), and Bartolomeo Giuseppe Guarneri, del Gesù (1698-1744). These two makers were chalk and cheese. Stradivari was prolific, exact, and catered to the highest end clients. Guarneri was from a great luthier family...

Antiquing is a thing in furniture, too. Ethan Allen beats some of their furniture with chains and metal rods before staining and finishing.
