In March, I was one of a bunch of people who called out Japan's response as completely inadequate and predicted a major public health crisis in April. And I was wrong! The situation is certainly bad, but it is not out-of-control bad like my theory of simple denial predicted.https://twitter.com/Pinboard/status/1239069964637630465 …

The infection rate is similar everywhere in the world except in Japan, which is a massive outlier. I am deeply skeptical that things are so different here, but I don't know how this belief could be tested, short of waiting for a crisis in urgent medical care. pic.twitter.com/mbdhEJ0nZQ

This is a hard blow for old Pinboard but good news for Japan, where I still have no idea what is going on. The consistent public health focus here on finding super-spreaders, and on crowded indoor spaces where there is lots of talking, is suggestive. But basically I'm baffled.

Same with the US. I had no idea that the US could shelter in place and it would work relatively calmly.

Still not working as well as it would with a coordinated federal effort but overall way less died that I thought was possible.

Do elderly people typically live at home until the end in Japan? If you don't have nursing homes it's probably a pretty big difference. And it could mean that Japan has a higher % share of unreported home deaths, but lower overall count.

These are good questions that I don't have the answers to. All we can say is that there is a ceiling on the possible number of unreported deaths (because at some point the press would report it), and we are below it. I have been looking for excess death data for Japan
