You don't have to like anything about the current system, but be honest about it's strengths and why it wound up in a dominant position. The reasons go beyond evil capitalists in top hats scheming.

I think most people are, or try to be. But we’ve also been taught to think about counter-factuals and fed a diet of Star Trek et al. We know in our bones that there are other possible systems for meeting human needs and that we may have to try them (again) soon.

I remember how almost every innovation that came together to make smart phones came out of government labs and academic blue sky research and only then got iterated on by the industry, once the principles were established.

That is absolutely true. But it's important to recognize the role of the iteration, too, and the Silicon Valley startup economy that grew up around it and fed off of it (I mean the late 20th century one, not the clown car we have today). Both ingredients were necesary
