I feel like people dunk on the "you're criticizing capitalism from your iphone" callout without acknowledging its fundamental correctness. Innovation and the production of consumer goods are two things that capitalism really is better at, whatever your political stancehttps://twitter.com/AyoCaesar/status/1255758942833172490 …

But all that said, yeah, if you're tweeting from your iPhone about consumer capitalism being irredeemable and wrong, your beliefs about the world are incoherent. There's a reason it's an iPhone, and not a WePhone!

The inability of the socialist bloc to make computers, even with a massive program of industrial espionage, had severe repercussions on both the Soviet military and central planning, and was one reason the whole system went belly up. It's a topic I would like to learn more about

Capitalist economic theory proposes competition as a selective pressure in the market, and so demands avoiding monopoly or (business) monoculture, a global sociopolitical monoculture could have similar destructive effects. Nation states no longer compete for allegiance.

One theory I've heard is that lots of industrial development in the US or Japan was thanks to strong coordination between corps + govt. Grand unifying theory here could be that the dual-pole system can drive strong improvements (relative to just one or the other)

There's something to that, but you also have to look at the role of really small private startups in fields like aerospace, software, chemical engineering, microchips, even agriculture. They were a legitimate innovation engine through the whole postwar period

Socialism did help the workers. The problem is, the workers it helped were those not governed by it. The workers behind the Iron Curtain served as a sort of sacrificial anode for Western social democracy.

It absolutely did. A lurking fear of a communist revolution kept a lot of people... let’s call it a bit more honest than they might have ever wanted to be.
