I really don't understand the coronavirus at all. Simultaneously very contagious but apparently quite responsive to social distancing measures, and very uneven in its impact. This thread is a safe space for the confused; those with the answers can have the rest of Twitter.

The popular explanations so far have involved drawing lines around where it hit hard and where it didn't, and then coming up with rationalizing stories to explain this difference. Reasons include weather, tuberculosis vaccine, racism against effective third-world governments, etc

In my estimation, people are not leaving themselves sufficient mental room for unknown unknowns. The sheer number of explanations for the anomalous spread of this disease is a warning that we don't understand something

Why Ecuador and not Bangladesh? What's the deal with Japan? Why New York City and not Boston? Why Lombardy and not Sweden? Why were Florida and Louisiana not a crisis? Stuff like that is what puzzles me and doesn't seem to paint a coherent picture.
