I really don't understand the coronavirus at all. Simultaneously very contagious but apparently quite responsive to social distancing measures, and very uneven in its impact. This thread is a safe space for the confused; those with the answers can have the rest of Twitter.

In my estimation, people are not leaving themselves sufficient mental room for unknown unknowns. The sheer number of explanations for the anomalous spread of this disease is a warning that we don't understand something

Real evidence will have to wait on things like serological surveys. Right now you're telling yourself a story (which may be true!), but the burden of proof is on you

My core takeaway is that comparing raw numbers between countries is absolutely worthless cuz of the "unknown factor", and at best you can try and guess the unknown factor between countries is at least constant over time so you can just compare trends.

Like testing regimes are different, there _could_ be weird other weather reasons or vaccine reasons, but you could also say "let's bundle that all up to N and then the rest is the comparable part" cuz 200 cases in Tokyo clearly isn't equivalent to 200 cases in NYC.
