That isn't true at all, both cities have people at every rung of the economic ladder. They are not Atherton. But the housing and policy situation is idiosyncratic and not really representative of the rest of the country

I have never lived where parking validation or bodegas or takeout was a thing. Not saying it's better or worse, only that coastal myopia is just that. Was hoping that the internet would lead to a spectrum of non-coastal voices; instead we got Anime Nazis and more David Brooks.

Reporters in the U.K. and France (not sure about Italy) can reach most of the country from the capital in a day trip by car. Very not true of the US.
