Forgive me if this is a cold question; I genuinely want to understand the answer. Isn't a 90% death rate of coronavirus patients on ventilators somewhat in tension with the message that we have to do everything in our power to flatten the curve so we don't run out of ventilators?

I frequently saw only ICU beds as the limit of capacity, not ventilators per se. And oxygen, cpap, ventilators are all used in ICU. For example, Boris was in ICU but only on oxygen.

It's been occupying the media because it's a resource that states can request from fed stockpile but Trump admin is turning it into a political fight, which is a thing media likes to latch onto. Other resources like ICU beds and hospital workers don't share that dynamic.
