if a society were purely democratic, some threshold on popular vote of all citizens would determine policy prescriptions. 50%+1, 60%+1, whatever. the reason no state does this is precisely because democracy has potential to be dictatorial and there have to be some rails.

it’s hard to argue with imprecise usage but there is no unjaundiced frame in which New Zealand is slouching toward “authoritarianism” in the widely understood or academic meaning of the word. if aldern suspends elections through 2022, i’ll max to great slate v4.
