Australia, New Zealand and even Canada have far weaker protections for civil liberties than American audiences think (to the extent that American audiences think at all). So much is just a matter of custom and tradition; when you look at the law, there is enormous latent power.

Their approach is a huge gamble on a vaccine in the near or perhaps medium term. If that doesn't happen it's a mistake. Sweden is the exact opposite gamble. I've got no idea which approach ends up being the better one.

You think they should be letting a bunch of folks get infected now, to start getting it out of the way? How is that better than waiting until we at least have some treatments and understanding of the best interventions to slow transmission?
