This is a sane and welcome move that I see people in my feed attacking as if Florida were releasing plague rats into orphanages. Let people go to the beach! The new rule still has some dumb elements—why can't you bring a towel or sunbathe? But it's a step in the right direction.https://twitter.com/CBSNews/status/1251334623734517763 …

If the problem is crowding, then certainly address that problem. But don't lie about risks that aren't there. We've seen from beachgoing in Hong Kong (presented in the same scolding and apocalyptic tone) that this is not a behavior that is driving much spread.

I think a significant issue is that if you open the beaches it’s not JUST locals who show up. There will be people from out of town. That means increased traffic, not to mention accidents and thus, non-COVID hospitalizations. Additionally, more people in stores. It’s problematic.

I understand. But those are problems that can also be addressed and managed. The idea that all these beachgoers would have otherwise stayed home is not credible—they're going to go somewhere, so these same issues will happen no matter what.

Well, that’s the issue isn’t it? They SHOULD be staying home, with the exception of necessary trips like the grocery store and these should be kept to a minimum. The beach is not a fucking necessity. If we all got on the same page, there wouldn’t be calls to open the beaches.

No, people should be allowed to go outdoors as much as they want. This isn't some test of fortitude, or a mass house arrest.
