so my first job was at an Educational Access cable TV station, which along with the City Access station and the Public Access station, are independent nonprofits chartered by the city, funded by cable franchise fees; the cable companies paid them in order to be allowed to operate

(Our legal status was funny and confusing; we were headquartered in the school district HQ, used their networks and accouting systems, they handled our payroll, we interoperated heavily, but were technically distinct; the city access station had a similar relationship w/city)

It's grim, but obituaries are good for local papers. And classifieds. We underestimate how much losing paid sections hurt papers, it's not just advertising.
