The 'flatten the curve' visualization was brilliant, but this is a whole other level of hard. "Imagine a chessboard, where on each square I put a grain of rice, then two, then four, and so on." "Okay" "Now imagine some of those grains of rice are also little chessboards..."

I've been struggling with the idea when trying to explain it to my child. The best I came up with is to extend the chess board metaphor, but have some corn and barley in with the rice. One grows faster than the rice and the other slower. It helped, a little, but still needs work.
