By far the most surprising social finding of the pandemic is the extent to which Americans have lost interest in sports. My theory is that because we can't go outside and play team sports ourselves, the televised version grows less relevant and interesting https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/04/07/technology/coronavirus-internet-use.html …pic.twitter.com/sVJJgmch3e

The need for a Strategic Sports Reserve has been proved beyond question. Once it's safe to play (or once there is a Seropositive League), we need to send pro teams to remote military bases to play hundreds of games, to be recorded and kept sealed in reserve for the next crisis

Can we stop talking about how we’re not talking about sports now

Sports leagues are on hiatus = no highlights to watch on espn

But... as the article says, all major leagues have called off games. So there's very little in the way of sports to consume. Isn't that the stronger reason?

Isn’t it just that the sports games are cancelled? There is just nothing to watch. At least here in Germany they cancelled all soccer games, etc. Same for the NBA AFAIK.

I think a bigger cause of the drop off is the lack of new events for ESPN to actually talk about with all of the major leagues not active.

Only reason I’m not watching basketball is that they’re only running past games due to the league suspension. I wonder to what extent this applies to others as well.

The issue is there's no *live* sports on. It's just re-runs of old games and random chatter. Look at ESPN's site. It's all "Our simulated March Madness brackets!!!" and "Who would have won the NBA MVP?". No one cares about that. We care about new, *live* games happening.

I think it's because sports is the ultimate 'newsy' news (no new sports = no use for it) and largely relevant as a social lubricant - which just don't need right now .
