Telling people not to leave their homes is a much stronger demand than telling them to socially distance, and the fact that at least two health ministers (Scotland and NZ) have not been able to follow their own advice is a warning

An extreme version of this problem is taking place in Hong Kong, where 300k domestic workers are required to live in their employer's home (think small apartment) and the only place to go on days off was overpasses or small parks. You should not imprison an entire population

The counterpoint to that is that many humans have proven in the last month that they cannot follow simple instructions and they will push every rule to the letter...

(6 feet isn’t really adequate, after all.)

that's because we've tried telling people to socially distance and they just don't. It hasn't worked.

I know what you’re saying...but, the phrase slippery slope has never been more appropriate than in this setting. NZ has a single shot at this and it’s dependent on role modelling and “all in” mentality. It’s a marathon not a sprint but only together will we have a chance.

How do you mean New Zealand has a single shot at this? You're just trying to tamp down the rate of spread at this point.

I’m in NZ. Nobody is imprisoned, people are allowed (and encouraged) to go for walks or bike rides around our local area. The amount of people walking by outside on the street is 10x the usual and people chat with eachother across the road, it’s quite lovely really.

That's great to hear! Which part are you in?

It wasn’t going to the beach, it was that he drove out of his local area to get there. If you can walk/bike safely to a beach in the local area, you can do that. No swimming, surfing, etc while there, because of the risk you’ll need to de-bubble people if you get in trouble.
