The Japanese approach is to warn strongly against crowded settings in enclosed spaces where there is talking. So either the masks help or there is some other reason that this country, where there has been a total leadership vacuum at the national level, does not look like Italy.

But then, Japan is getting worse? Just that it is still better than western countries?
-
Yes, that it took it so long to get bad despite almost no testing or interventions aside from mask use.

Japan have twice as much ICU per capita than any other country, but population is also older, don’t like where it’s going....

The trajectory is terrible. My only point is that it's clearly much slower than other places, and masks are a strong candidate explanation for this

What’s the deal with Japan? I’ve been hearing really mixed messages from people (ex-pats) living there regarding the situation on the ground.

I can only tell you what I see in Kyoto. People are behaving as if there is no crisis, except there are no tourists. School is back in session, public transit is normal, stores and restaurants are full of people.

Masks “protect other people from you” - so if most people going out are in masks, most sources of contagion are interrupted. This reduces infection rate. Right?
-
