Oh my god, of course we know the answer to this! Masks work! People pointed to the experience of East Asia, that wasn't enough. So we got some published studies proving it, now that's somehow not enough either. At least remember to wear a mask as you shift the goal posts.https://twitter.com/maggiekb1/status/1247311559317057537 …

Nobody actually knows for certain if you should be wearing a face mask or not. Like a lot of the things about COVID-19, the real question is not "should I wear this?", but "how do we make decisions when we don't know the answer?" https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/science-has-no-clear-answers-on-the-coronavirus-face-masks-are-no-exception/ …

There's a ton of stuff about this crisis where we're making decisions in the face of uncertainty, but masks ain't it. The only reason for confusion was dismissiveness of East Asia and a failure to adequately explain that you wear a mask to protect people around you, not yourself.

It takes a while to get this point. My girlfriend (who had the foresight to order masks, I didn't) had to beat it into me. But I implore you to be less thick-headed than I was. I wrote this in case it helps expedite your conversion on this lifesaving issue https://idlewords.com/2020/04/let_s_all_wear_a_mask.htm …

I don't understand. We know that touching your face is bad and covering coughs and sneezes is good. A mask accomplishes all of this. This seems obvious at this point

There's some kind of performative epistemological uncertainty that has become the savvy stance in the Western press over this. They are also afraid of just baldly pointing out that we got the worst advice on this from public health authorities for months.

We just need to sell this as <mask denialism is based on racism against Asians>, and everyone will wear masks just to show how non-racist they are.
