Fauci today: “Part of the reason for wearing face masks is to protect you from infecting you–he gestures at reporters. I had my test yesterday and it was negative.” But isn't there a substantial false negative rate on tests, leaving aside the role model reasons to wear a mask?

yeah, they also take into account symptoms and contact w/ infected I think. Also I think multiple tests makes more sense to eliminate false positives.

my understanding is that these tests are designed to have a very low false negative rate (aside from the botched ones...) and a mangeable false positive rate, but FPs are less important to totally eliminate
