Kiwi friends, the plan in New Zealand is clearly "shut down completely" and it seems to be working. But what is the plan after that? Has there been discussion about it?

We've been through a few weeks of that now in Denmark. Press starting to say the government will announce a plan of slowly opening up again tomorrow 🤞

I think the expectation is that, should we manage to control the outbreak, we will gradually decrease our response level but the borders will remain closed for some time - possibly until a vaccine is widely adopted or the outbreak is under control.

I think it's too early, though, to say that it seems to be working.

What they've said so far is they're planning to reduce the alert level (it's currently at the highest level - 4) as/when they believe it's safe to do so. Said it's possible different alert levels will apply to different cities/regions.https://covid19.govt.nz/government-actions/covid-19-alert-system …

I haven't seen details yet on how the level reduction (or subsequent increase) decisions will be made, or if they'll adjust the levels/their application if the situation persists for too long.

Why would you need to restrict the economy at all in that case? New Zealand can be easily sealed off from the world.

When I was in New Zealand in February there were zero cases, it would have been a great plan. Unfortunately by March it was non-zero.

There is optimism that it’s working but also too soon to really say. There has not been much discussion about “after that” yet. The government support package is designed to maintain the link between people and their employers, so folks can get back to work quickly when possible.

The result is a suspended animation of sorts while we wait to see if the health crisis can be contained. The timeframes discussed are still short. I don’t think it is widely understood yet how long there are likely to be border restrictions in place.
