For those who don't know it, "try everything at scale" was also the strategy used in the Manhattan Project to separate uranium isotopes. One of the techniques used up a large chunk of the country's silver supply. Really cool to see Bill Gates going old school on a vital problem!https://twitter.com/michael_nielsen/status/1246457825720553472 …

Bill Gates is setting up factories to manufacture 7 leading vaccine candidates before we know which is best & safest; we can test the vaccines in parallel, and then throw away all but the factory for the best vaccine. May save many months. Just extraordinary. pic.twitter.com/JGjkJ6FKNa

When you absolutely, positively need to beat Hitler to atomic weapons/defeat a virus, then time is the only thing that matters and you draw the appropriate conclusions. But it takes real guts and leadership to act on them.

The Manhattan project didn't have Twitter or Hacker News, so they had to waste years and years of effort on problems those message boards could have solved a priori. On the plus side, though, there's no way humanity could have endured online Feynman fanboys without nuking itself.

the fact that he's going to just blow a billion+ dollars on what's going to be nothing is pretty much the only decent thing I have seen from billionaires in all this.

What do you think will happen to his billionaire status if he doesn't do this and the economy contacts by "trillions" (his estimate)? This might as well be a cost-saving measure for him.

not just silver -- the project relied on a shipment of rare congolese high-purity uranium ore on staten island when they called the importer (edgar sengier), he was like 'I know what this is for, you don't have to say it, it's yours'
