This is a classic example of what Heller coined "a real doozy of a conundrum" in his famous novel, the title of which escapes mehttps://twitter.com/Pinboard/status/1246036141196771328 …

This is how it was always going to work. Using hospital ships in a pandemic environment presents real problems the role its supposed to serve in is as 'excess trauma capacity' so that hospitals can reconfigure themselves. None of that process was ever going to be immediate.
I for one am shocked that a negative test for the coronavirus is required to board the ship which is specifically in place to be a coronavirus-free zone for otherwise injured and weakened patients.
I get wanting to know everyone is negative. You get one person with the covid in there, hoo boy. The ship seems most hopeful as a way to "clear out" those already in a hospital to make room for Covid patients. But I wonder how many beds can you free like that?
The thing is, if you moor a hospital ship in New York, you're going to get infected people aboard. The only way to keep it free is to do what they are doing—keeping it empty.
