wow, no I didn’t. Can’t find the programme now, but a few years back there was one interviewing orchestral players. It’s a huge mental challenge to play well because you have to count so precisely; there’s barely any landmarks in it.

There was a lovely episode of radiolab or something similar about it; I'll see if I can dig it up. The thesis is that Ravel wrote it in the early stages of his aphasia, since an attraction to repetitive patterns is a symptom.
