All the information journalists needed to share was already in their own damned tweet. But they were fixated on whether masks keep you from getting sick, rather than talking to public health experts in post-SARS countries about how masks prevent others from getting sick from YOUpic.twitter.com/zXS0tixjBm
"Why didn't Vox simply ignore the CDC and WHO's guidance on masks" kind of seems to be burying the lead about who the public should be upset at.
The job of journalism is not to uncritically repeat what people in authority tell you. Clearly Yglesias at least was skeptical about this advice, since he bought masks, but that skepticism didn't translate into journalism.
