Japan Twitter, what are your favorite English language books on the country that aren't something like "The Cherry Blossom and the Salaryman"? I greatly enjoyed Bending Adversity by @davidpilling and Embracing Defeat by John Dower—would love more on those lines, past or present

Making Common Sense of Japan. Out of print and increasingly dated, but has some great insights. Sugimoto’s Japanese Society. Academic in character; focuses on diversity of Japanese experience.
