Brilliant book. I read it and then bought more copies to give to my friends. I learned so much about Japanese history, culture, society from that book.

Making Common Sense of Japan. Out of print and increasingly dated, but has some great insights. Sugimoto’s Japanese Society. Academic in character; focuses on diversity of Japanese experience.

To be mentioned in the same breath as the great John Dower made my day. For the record, his book is better.
