The Financial Times still has its blurb about "a culture of obedience" on the chart showing the low increase in the death rate here, but I think that says more about the FT than about Japan.

Have we gotten any confirmation on that tweet claiming the CDC is going to change their mask guidance in the next 10 days? Twitter is great but no one is going to listen until the CDC announces it.

I was expecting that the "bcg vaccine for tuberculosis reduces severity significantly" theory would have been shot down by now like all the other dumb internet theories about asian people having more ACE receptors or whatever, but it seems like it hasn't been yet.

When I ask Japanese people here it’s: masks + culture of hand washing + no touching in public + general cleanliness. Also could be a variable we don’t know of yet like some related vaccination or hidden vector.
-
Or a vaccine they didn’t have, strangely! See “Antibody-Dependent Enhancement”https://jvi.asm.org/content/94/5/e02015-19 …

They probably are, but you've had it a month longer than us and *still* haven't blown out your hospitals. So masks get you half of the needed way.

It seems to me that the Japanese response was a little bit more sophisticated. A central government agency, prevention of large-scale infection clusters, suspending large events and all schools, and an entrance policy for medical services may have helped. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_coronavirus_pandemic_in_Japan#Phase_2:_Mitigation …

There was no prevention of large-scale clusters. They have random spread at things like music concerts, they just refuse to test. The large event suspensions and school closings were a real thing, but now that's mostly over as people hang out in groups outside school
