I am not feeling too happy about security right now. My phone died last week, and my laptop only occasionally turns on. My new phone came today, hooray! Except I can't get any of my second factors to authenticate (since my phone broke...) so my account is locked for 3-5 days.

Am I foolish to believe this wouldn't happen to me because I have backup codes?

I stupidly keep my backup codes at my desk, which I have lost access to during the california shutdown

There's nothing stupid about this. There just hasn't been enough thought (and work) about making fallbacks better for 2FA in real world situations. People are expected to attain ludicrous levels of preparation when setting everything up, and made to feel guilty for any lockout

This was my biggest gripe with Google's Advanced Protection program, which was rolled out with much hubbub and marketed as a must-have for campaign security without testing it with a single American political campaign, making it unusable by ordinary mortals most at risk

Anyway, I'm sorry to soapbox your situation. Thanks for bringing this real problem up in a public place!
