The events of the past few weeks have turned politics upside down. But one of the only things we KNOW about the future is that there will be an election this fall, and that the candidates running for those seats right now are the people who will end up in Congress, in power.

The problem is, the good candidates—the candidates you would like to see win!—are dead in the water right now because they have no money to run on. That is because fundraising fell over and died along with the stock market and the rest of normal life a couple of weeks back.

I've seen reports of a 70 to 90% drop in fundraising from typical levels. That means several bad things: no money to pay campaign staff, who have no way to get other work right now. It means no budget to reach people the only way they can be reached right now—through media.

It means that political life now favors only those who take large corporate donations, which will continue through the worst of the crisis. Those aren't the people we need in office. With just a week left in the FEC quarter, let me re-introduce the fine people on the Great Slate.

What do all these candidates have in common? They are Democrats running in tough, rural districts located in states where there will be a contested Senate election. The Senate candidates will focus on suburban turnout. These people will do the hard work in the rest of the state

The simple truth about fundraising, and the reason I lean so hard on it here, is that it's a place where you really can make a difference. Every dollar you give means less time spent on the phones fundraising and more time spent doing the vital work their districts need right now
