Why? If it were permanent sure, the unemployed would need to transition to the surviving industries. But if it’s temporary, why not? The same amount of food, goods, health care, and infra is still here.

It's on a scale of months to a couple of years. The American economy is designed to run on nearly full employment; if you want to run it at socialism with a skeleton crew, you get a permanent change in everyone's way of life
