One thing that really struck me in rural parts of the US is how more and more of the economy seems to revolve around health care. The big towns are all built around hospitals. Now we are about to try making health care the principal form of economic activity on the national level

Small town Indiana here, some of the fastest growing/strongest parts of the local economy are hospitals, healthcare-adjacent biz and edu, retirement communities and even death industry (coffins, grave markers, etc).

Look where money enters the local economy. Medicare/Medicaid brings in govt money from outside the local economy. Ag and govt transfer main source of outside income for many areas.
