OK, rather than labeling "defeatism", please posit a historically supported and currently plausible scenario where power is voluntarily rescinded without use of violence. I can't come up with one.

In an American context? A good example are the post-Watergate reforms, including the Church Committee. Devolution in the UK and EU are more recent examples internationally. My own outlook, of course, is colored by the events of 1989, maybe the most spectacular modern example
