This is the best policy recommendation I've seen yet. Institute surveillance now - with built-in guarantees that, after the crisis, the Big Tech surveillance-capitalist model will be neutralized. by @Pinboard https://idlewords.com/2020/03/we_need_a_massive_surveillance_program.htm …

I think this is an awful idea and we should be embarrassed anyone is proposing it.

which part is awful - the "defeat Corona" part or the "reform Big Tech" part?

I gotta say, I find this very alarming, too. As you point out about 2001, once you let them do something, it's hard to put the genie back in the bottle.

Allowing the government to look backwards and identify which phones I was around and attach names to my associates. That's got to stay illegal.

I could probably get used to the idea. I'm an old liberal. It would take time. For THIS crisis, you would end up with every Republican and Independent, and some Democrats, leaving their phones at home. It would take too long to adjust to the idea.

I also think it's impractical just on a cost effectiveness basis. They don't have time and people necessary to do regular contact tracing now. Getting an automated call saying "YoU WeRe NeaR A ConTaGiouS PerSOn At 3:35 p.M. YesTerDay" will freak people the fuck out.

Leaving that aside, I'm curious about the first point. The stuff is already tracked and recorded in tons of places. Why would having the CDC do it make it so threatening? Is it just the realization of what's being recorded? Is it the fact that it's a government agency?

The GOP-controlled dictatorship seizes that data, uses it to identify political opponents, then orders the military to do mass roundups and executions. I had family in an eastern bloc country who died in similar circumstances at the hands of the KGB. Yes, it could happen here.

Of course. But if you don't trust legal barriers within government to keep data protected, then why do you trust those agencies to not already be collecting the same data from the private companies that stockpile it?
