There are two different kinds of masks we talk about. The one on the left is an N95 mask. If you own any of those, DONATE THEM to your nearest hospital! On the right is a procedure mask. These are the kind you should wear if you need to go out in public. You can make them at homepic.twitter.com/HWm2vM1hSb

Here is a nice howto from the Deaconess Hospital system in Evansville, IN showing how you can make a face mask at home https://www.deaconess.com/How-to-make-a-Face-Mask …

Here is a lovely tutorial (with subtitled video) from Hong Kong about how to make reusable cloth masks (thanks to @odaiwai for the link!) https://diymask.site/

So if these masks don't work—well, you look dumb, but are at least sending a strong social signal to others that you are mindful of the pandemic. And if they work, even a little (as the evidence suggests), then you are helping by wearing one on your rare, necessary public outings

Whatever you do, it is vital that you donate N95 masks to medical people who need them to stay safe. You don't need them any more than you need a welder's face mask to protect against sunlight. But you really want the welders to have one, instead of making do with sunglasses

A cute thing in Japan is that some people are writing "I HAVE HAY FEVER" on their masks (there are also stickers to this effect) so that no one on the bus has a heart attack when they sneeze.

You wear a mask to protect others. They wear a mask to protect you. People in Asia can attest that it makes for a night and day difference in what it's like to be out in public. All around you see evidence that people are trying to keep you healthy, and looking out for you.

Again, the current public health messaging in the United States around masks amounts to "you're too dumb to wear this lifesaving device correctly, so remain helpless." That advice is not tenable and as @zeynep has pointed out, guarantees maximum hoarding

One final benefit of masks that doesn't get much talked about—they are *uncomfortable*, so you have an added incentive to get stuff done and get home, where you can breathe freely and paw at your naked face with freshly-scrubbed hands like an 18th century voluptuarypic.twitter.com/L75eiP7CAJ

And one benefit that I forgot! We are seeing FAR too many reports about people being singled out and harassed in the US for public mask wearing, particularly Asian people. If we can normalize this useful public health habit, we'll be helping them stay safe in other ways, too.

I'm relatively certain that "ignore what the WHO and every public health official is saying, we've reasoned it out" isn't a good response to that. If there was better advice than the WHO's "wear a mask only if you're infected or working in healthcare", the WHO would adopt it.

And if you need a Colbert truthiness context for that, Michael Ryan is leading the WHO efforts on covid 19, and he's Irish. Covid-19 made us close our pubs and stop distilling whiskey. So he's highly motivated :D

Interestingly, two of the pictures on the Wikipedia page for the 1918-19 "Spanish" Flu Pandemic show a poster from Alberta advising people to make and wear masks, and a streetcar conductor in Seattle refusing to let non-mask-wearing passengers on board.
