There are two different kinds of masks we talk about. The one on the left is an N95 mask. If you own any of those, DONATE THEM to your nearest hospital! On the right is a procedure mask. These are the kind you should wear if you need to go out in public. You can make them at homepic.twitter.com/HWm2vM1hSb

Here is a nice howto from the Deaconess Hospital system in Evansville, IN showing how you can make a face mask at home https://www.deaconess.com/How-to-make-a-Face-Mask …

Here is a lovely tutorial (with subtitled video) from Hong Kong about how to make reusable cloth masks (thanks to @odaiwai for the link!) https://diymask.site/

So if these masks don't work—well, you look dumb, but are at least sending a strong social signal to others that you are mindful of the pandemic. And if they work, even a little (as the evidence suggests), then you are helping by wearing one on your rare, necessary public outings

Unless you aren't infected and wear the mask in a contaminated area, in which case the mask holds the droplets containing the virus right up close to your nose and mouth to increase your odds of getting infected. Please stop with the wrong information. https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public/when-and-how-to-use-masks …

Evidence is becoming overwhelming that the masks help, and at worst don't hurt.https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanres/article/PIIS2213-2600(20)30134-X/fulltext …

That's nice, but it's also some silicon valley levels of from-first-principles silliness. Masks won't help if you don't have the training to use them. They'll become a source of infection you wear over your airway in no time. That's why the WHO says not to use them generally.

I'm quoting the Lancet and public health authorities from South Korea, Hong Kong, and China. You don't need special training to wear a procedure mask or cloth mask, and you shouldn't be wearing N95 masks—those are needed by hospitals

Not everyone knows how to take off a contaminated mask without contaminating their hands. Even that lancet article doesn't say everyone should use them. Seriously, a lot of people read what you write. If you're wrong, you'll harm people. And you're disagreeing with the WHO.
