So if these masks don't work—well, you look dumb, but are at least sending a strong social signal to others that you are mindful of the pandemic. And if they work, even a little (as the evidence suggests), then you are helping by wearing one on your rare, necessary public outings

Whatever you do, it is vital that you donate N95 masks to medical people who need them to stay safe. You don't need them any more than you need a welder's face mask to protect against sunlight. But you really want the welders to have one, instead of making do with sunglasses

A cute thing in Japan is that some people are writing "I HAVE HAY FEVER" on their masks (there are also stickers to this effect) so that no one on the bus has a heart attack when they sneeze.

And one benefit that I forgot! We are seeing FAR too many reports about people being singled out and harassed in the US for public mask wearing, particularly Asian people. If we can normalize this useful public health habit, we'll be helping them stay safe in other ways, too.

Some of the diy mask designs allow nonwoven fabric inserts and doctors need the filter materials as well as masks. Right now they are cutting up surgical blankets in Boston for this
