Washington Post still publishing headlines about how masks don't help, as if they were a bizarre superstition and not part of an effective intervention in the only countries that have gotten coronavirus under control. Source here is a psychology professor who writes about successpic.twitter.com/IMvBzOeCzk

If they were ineffective then why would any doctors and nurses need them? Apparently they can just toss salt over their shoulders instead. Or maybe it's this guy who is the tosser.

Because (1) it protects their patients from being further infected, (2) they are performing exams and procedures up close, possibly many per day, that may expose them

So you admit masks work to protect the doctors. The same masks would be protecting citizens as well. We know these masks work, look up N95 at 3M with their specifications.

I am saying that doctors are in many more situations where masks would help, much more often, and since they are treating patients, they need them more than anyone else. You're right that masks can protect citizens too but it's marginal compared to benefit of hand washing.

The discouragement of healthy people from buying masks is to prevent supply shortages for medical personnel who needs them to treat the infected. If doctors are infected, then they become patients and can’t treat other patients. Then there would be no one to treat the infected.

All this accomplishes is lying to healthy people, who inevitably hoard the masks anyway.

The hoarding is from the fear and panic of not knowing what to do. Education is key. It’s lying if they aren’t giving alternatives, like coughing into sleeves (which people have been told to do since the beginning).

Coughing into a sleeve won't prevent *you* from being infected of others. Also, countless people (cashiers, cleaners, cab drivers) are exposed in the same degree as health professionals.

Not in Asia. Look at what they are doing to make the infections go down not up. They test temperature everywhere and wear masks. They even show how people can make them at home. They test people instead of buggering up the tests. It's how people don't die, you do what works.

I actually agree with you that Asia is handling all of this much better. It's ridiculous that we aren't testing temperatures, and their testing is much better. People are actually making masks at home in the US too, but mainly to send to hospitals
