Washington Post still publishing headlines about how masks don't help, as if they were a bizarre superstition and not part of an effective intervention in the only countries that have gotten coronavirus under control. Compare that attitude with the clear (and obvious) evidence that anything is better than nothing when it comes to covering your face.https://twitter.com/CMichaelGibson/status/1239718351573843973 …

What we'll end up with is public guidance for how to make (possibly re-usable) masks for personal use in public out of a variety of materials, coupled with pleas to donate higher-quality medical masks to health care providers. But this advice should have been given in January

When thing calm down, the Washington Post is going to want to convene its surviving editors and have some real soul-searching about how they chose to cover the pandemic https://twitter.com/wesyang/status/1241598924516986881 …

yes! one of our HK friends handmade a pile of masks in January / February. She gifted some to us thinking we’d take them back to Hong Kong. Ended up wanting them here. And now we don’t have to use or hoard real surgical masks. Donated those a while back.

Put together it’s fuckinf propaganda. Over saturation and dissonant messaging is flat propaganda. Media oppression. I’ve talked to several people in medical who get told different opinions constantly from people they’ve dealt with. People are panicky and strongly opportunistic.

I know people who wear PPE from home and back again. Without the goggles they look like a Star Wars extra.

Yup this is already happening all over the place, at least one hospital locally has a yellow bin where volunteers can bring in sewn masks and the hospital will sterilize them (and then again between uses). TIL the effort is now being organized county-wide.https://kval.com/news/local/mckenzie-willamette-medical-center-employees-sewing-masks-to-help-with-ppe-shortage …
