Dear air travel Twitter: a few months ago, I bought the most expensive plane ticket of my life, a $5,271 round trip business class ticket for my mom to Japan. @CathayPacific cancelled the return leg but is refusing to refund more than $276 of the amount. Do I have any redress?

The company you booked with has you over a barrel in my experience. I used to work for an airline (handling United Airlines flights) and the worst experiences I saw were mostly Priceline/Cheapo Air/etc because the terms they give you are just awful & leave you no recourse.

I thought I was fortunate to book this directly with
@CathayPacific, who I did not expect to simply not give back my money1 reply 0 retweets 13 likes -

Oh wait you *did* book first-party and they won't refund the full coupon value? That seems highly suspect. On what basis do they claim the value is two hundred odd dollars?

Another thing to look into is your rights under the contract of carriage, which (in case you don't know, seems like you travel a lot but I want to be thorough) under normal circumstances requires them to provide alternate arrangements at their expense if they cancel.

They might claim that these are not normal circumstances and that they have some loophole out of the contract of carriage, in which case you might want to get the Dept of Transit involved and see if they have any advice for you.

Another thing that's worth trying is to call back a number of times and go through the process with some different agents. During irregular operations, agents can differ significantly in how they apply policies, how well they've been trained, what leeway they're willing to give.

Phone calls aren't even possible now. They'll only talk to people who are within 72 hours of travel. I'm interacting via a semi-automated Twitter DM hellscape

Anyway, thanks for multiple pieces of good advice!
