There's a lot of just-so stories about why coronavirus is not a crisis in Japan that I'm skeptical about. Yeah, people don't kiss and hug Italian style, but there are crowds at temples in Kyoto all sharing these ritual hand rinser things (oh irony). Buses are quite crowded, toopic.twitter.com/tDX45FHSAS

The difficulty with Japan is that it's a country where two things are equally possible: —a major cover-up by the people in authority —everyday citizens carefully following fairly elaborate public health advice As an outsider here, it's very difficult to tell which predominates

The main visible impact in Japan from a visitor's perspective is that some public spaces are much less crowded than normal, more people wear masks than usual, and there is hand sanitizer put out in front of places like grocery stores. But no sense of extreme measures at all.

Are they checking temperature at large building entrances?

I have not seen a temperature check in Japan anywhere outside of arrivals at international airports. Has anyone else?

The only thing I've seen change in tokyo is the lack of masks and toilet paper in conbini are now being replaced with other products like they don't even sell them there anymore.

Interesting! There are no masks to be found in Kyoto, but toilet paper is available everywhere I've looked.

That’s unfortunate, in Taiwan every office building and mall checks for fever and has a sanitizer dispenser at entrance

TBH, the temp checks at US airports got more checkers sick than they found people with fevers.

I believe the ones at Asian airports date back to SARS days and are done at a distance (a few meters) as you approach passport control
