The infection rate is similar everywhere in the world except in Japan, which is a massive outlier. I am deeply skeptical that things are so different here, but I don't know how this belief could be tested, short of waiting for a crisis in urgent medical care.pic.twitter.com/mbdhEJ0nZQ

I would welcome the opinion of people who know this field about why the Japanese numbers have remained so low compared to the experience of all other countries.

I'm a great believer in Japanese exceptionalism, but I'm also a great believer in the ability of Japanese authorities to cover up unpleasant truths. And my ignorance of things Japanese is eclipsed only by my ignorance of epidemiology. So, I ask the friendly experts of Twitter!

there’s a great museum about this in Osaka, Osaka Human Rights Museum (well it’s off the beaten path and dingy. but the exhibits are good and the fact it exists and its presentation are notable!)

Not epidemiologist but MD here. It seems to be a mix of some cover-up from Jap Auth, their early epidemiologic rigueur, and some of their exceptionalism, taking finally in account that they haven't done too much testing. We may only guess, by now.

Extensive contact tracing & relatively low testing. While some will undoubtedly say "Olympics, hiding", that's too simplistic. % positive among tested individuals is 6~7%, so not tested as extensively as S.Korea, but not missing that many. They can prob. 5x testing & 2x case #.

IIRC, S.Korea was ~3% positives on their intensive testing.
