The infection rate is similar everywhere in the world except in Japan, which is a massive outlier. I am deeply skeptical that things are so different here, but I don't know how this belief could be tested, short of waiting for a crisis in urgent medical care.pic.twitter.com/mbdhEJ0nZQ

I would welcome the opinion of people who know this field about why the Japanese numbers have remained so low compared to the experience of all other countries.

I'm a great believer in Japanese exceptionalism, but I'm also a great believer in the ability of Japanese authorities to cover up unpleasant truths. And my ignorance of things Japanese is eclipsed only by my ignorance of epidemiology. So, I ask the friendly experts of Twitter!

They don’t test much, just like the US.

Bowing instead of hugging and handshakes, and also a government that is very willing to cook the books to save the Olympics

I ambaffled by this myself. Not so much social distancing in Japan, and a lot of old people, susceptible to it. I don’t know if mask use is more significant than other countries such as SK or Taiwan, so I don’t know if that plays a role or not.

Many companies don’t allow WFH as well. And many tourists from china, etc... So Japan is really an interesting outlier

Protecting their investment in the Olympics? I think today they said they will not cancel it. How do you get people to come? “Virus isn’t widespread here”.

          1) How are the numbers arrived at? No test, no disease! Deaths tend to be well-measured, but rely on a doctor labeling right. 2) If the effect is real, I'll bet on JP oldies being zenly capable of self-isolation whilst masked rels with well-washed hands doorstep'em treat-baskets

I don’t have any data, but economically they probably have a larger population over 80 due to flat population growth rate. And they’re culturally less afraid of death I feel. They probably just aren’t checking their old people for a new virus and are fine with pneumonia?
