I would welcome the opinion of people who know this field about why the Japanese numbers have remained so low compared to the experience of all other countries.

I'm a great believer in Japanese exceptionalism, but I'm also a great believer in the ability of Japanese authorities to cover up unpleasant truths. And my ignorance of things Japanese is eclipsed only by my ignorance of epidemiology. So, I ask the friendly experts of Twitter!

I remember when I was in Japan I foolishly got a tea from a vending machine and then had to carry my garbage for hours because there was no garbage cans, and no garbage on the streets either. Everyone is so considerate and well organized there. It's like the opposite of America

We're going to have to deploy the national guard to stop people from going to Applebee's and infecting eachother

I don't think Japan is an outlier, I think South Korea is. Check graphs with other east Asian countries -- Singapore, Hong Kong, etc, pretty sure they also look like Japan. And I think South Korea would as well if not for that christian religious cult.

South Korea had a rise and brought it down, but part of that involved mass testing. Japan has had a very slow rate of official growth in cases (and almost half of that number was a cruise ship). They also do minimal testing
