I have difficulty believing these Japan numbers. Is there any expert consensus on this, for or against, outside Japan? (source: https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2020/03/12/814522489/singapore-wins-praise-for-its-covid-19-strategy-the-u-s-does-not …)pic.twitter.com/9Dd0ecEpyq

Japan had pretty low testing rates.

Yeah. I have a strong suspicion they don't want to know the real number, for Olympics reasons.

Given the numbers and the curve, wouldn't it be impossible to hide if the spread continued the way Italy's has? Wouldn't the cases from two weeks ago be showing up in ICUs and starting to overwhelm hospital systems?

The numbers definitely don't seem right, something seems off. But I wouldn't think Japan would be able to hide it as the acute symptoms become too widespread?

Japan shut down schools and events much earlier in this process, and many companies have had WFH policies much earlier. Also everyone started washing their hands. The incentives to not test are mostly the same in every country, and hospitals are not overflowing with cases.

Every day there's a bunch of discussion of this on the news, and everyone is cancelling events and even dinners between friends because of this (restaurants are suffering lots because of it). People are effectively self-quarantining

It’s true that they haven’t conducted as many tests as other countries. The real motivation is open to interpretation, but the rationale for testing only those who qualify does make sense.
