The current messaging (don't buy masks, because you totally don't need them, but medical professionals desperately need them and there's a shortage, even though we promise they won't help you at all!) is not really tenable or realistic about human psychology.
It sends a very different social signal (shoot me because I am about to rob your store)

I don't think I understand what you mean by the social signal of the mask. It indicates what? (not saying you're wrong)

That you're trying not to get other people sick. You're in "heightened alert mode" or whatever. It helps remind everyone not to shake hands, cough on each other, that kind of thing. It also gives people something specific to *do* besides worry, to help protect one another

can't imagine anyone here thinking that (if it just looks like a scarf covering mouth and nose), but I guess it may be true for many parts of the world, esp. US. It's basically impossible to attain face masks here now (since a week) - same for hand sanitizer
