It's far easier not to touch your face when you're wearing a mask, so I don't get why the American guidance continues to be not to do it. Even a cloth reusable mask helps with it (and is a visible social signal)

This is by far the most compelling reason I wear it as well. Doesn’t have to be N95 type to help keep my mitts from going straight from the subway strap to scratching my itchy nose.

Completely fine with placebo mask or even cone—I just want a physical barrier to touching my face, and something that people can see that demonstrates I'm trying to do my bit to not get them sick
