The current messaging (don't buy masks, because you totally don't need them, but medical professionals desperately need them and there's a shortage, even though we promise they won't help you at all!) is not really tenable or realistic about human psychology.

I'm in Japan right now, where the social pressure to wear a mask is pretty intense. As pure anecdote, having the mask on reminds me to wash and sanitize my hands a lot, and keeps me from pawing my mouth as much as I apparently normally do, putting pens in my mouth, etc.

CDC guidance to purchase and wear a brass diving helmet would take the pressure off the mask industry (needed by hospitals) and serve as a big economic stimulus to manufacturing, mining, VR headsets, and chiropractorspic.twitter.com/oX7V5aPamr

Same goes with a cheap pair of gloves. Buy a 10 pack and throw them in the wash one a week.

Limited supplies for actual health care providers who need many a day, is what I’ve read.

Right, but people will hoard these no matter what. It's basic psychology

Isn't it more to avoid misallocation of scarce mask resources until there's enough inventory? Not that it wouldn't be better in an ideal situation, just to avoid overuse in the short term.
-
The problem is the hoarding is inevitable. Better to tell people to re-use a single mask and donate the rest to hospitals (unless that puts them at greater risk, I am not a maskologist)

Apparently studies say people touch their face more while wearing a mask.

That's fascinating. Do you happen to know what to search on to find out more?
